One Second Coming — but two different kinds of “appearings.”
The Bible uses two different Greek words, two different audiences, and two different contexts.
This is why it feels like two events, but it’s actually one return expressed in two modes.
Let’s break it down cleanly and narratively.

1. Hebrews 9:28 — A private appearing to believers
> “He will appear a second time… to those who eagerly wait for Him.”
This is:
– selective (only to those who seek Him)
– spiritual
– relational
– repeated across the last 2000 years
– experienced by believers
This is the appearing Jesus promised in John 14:
> “I will manifest Myself to him.”
> “We will come to him and make Our home with him.”
This is not the global, visible return.
This is the ongoing appearing of Christ to His people.

2. Revelation 1:7 — The global, visible Second Coming
> “Every eye will see Him.”
This is:
– universal
– physical
– visible
– final
– the end of the age
This is the event Jesus described in Matthew 24:30:
> “All the tribes of the earth will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds.”
This is the public appearing.

3. Why they are not two “Second Comings”
Because the Bible uses two different Greek concepts:
1. “Appear” (φανερόω — phaneroō)
Used in Hebrews 9:28
Meaning: to reveal, to make oneself known, to manifest
This is personal revelation.
2. “Come” (ἔρχομαι — erchomai)
Used in Revelation 1:7
Meaning: to arrive, to come visibly, to appear publicly
This is public arrival.
These are not the same event, but they are part of the same return framework.

4. Jesus Himself taught these two modes
A. Private, spiritual appearing to believers
John 14:21 — “I will manifest Myself to him.”
John 14:23 — “We will come to him and make Our home with him.”
John 16:22 — “I will see you again.”
This is the Hebrews 9:28 appearing.
B. Public, visible appearing to the world
Matthew 24:30 — “They will see the Son of Man coming.”
Matthew 26:64 — “You will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds.”
Acts 1:11 — “This same Jesus will come in the same way.”

There is:
One Second Coming
…but it unfolds in two dimensions:
1. The inward appearing (to believers)

– Happens spiritually
– Happens to those who seek Him

2. The outward appearing (to the world)
– Happens once
– Happens visibly
– Happens at the end of the age
– Revelation 1:7
– Matthew 24:30
– Acts 1:11
These are not two returns — they are two expressions of the same return.
